Led by Upper School Chemistry teachers, students explored and investigated the contaminated drinking water in Flint, Michigan. After researching and discussing the social and political aspects of the crisis, several students took action by writing letters to politicians and referenced their findings.

Middle School Technology and Math teachers came together (thanks to a collaboration grant for faculty) to create a cross-disciplinary Skyscraper Project in Grade 7. Students calculated the dimensions of an existing skyscraper, then designed and printed 3D models on a new 3D printer purchased with the grant.

You expanded horizons by contributing to service learning trips to France, South Africa and Colombia. As part of Friends’ Global Education program, the experiences helped faculty and students integrate international perspectives into their teaching and learning.

You fostered creativity in Grade 1 drama students. Students worked as artistic collaborators — as playwrights, set designers, costume designers and performers — to create their own original movies. In addition to teaching the basics of performance and collaboration, the project honored students’ endless imaginations.

You celebrated teaching practice by supporting the annual Art of Teaching lecture. Beloved English teacher John Byrne spoke to a packed Meetinghouse about his journey as “The Accidental Educator.” In his talk Mr. Byrne reflected on his journey from his youth in Ireland to his storied career at Friends.
